From the base of Brady Street Hill to the doors of MLK Interpretive Center, thousands of Iowans gathered in downtown Davenport on Saturday morning to take part in the nationwide “Hands Off!” protest — joining over 1,400 coordinated events across all 50 states and beyond.
The local protest began around 11:00 AM and concluded just after 1:00 PM, drawing supporters from across the Quad Cities and eastern Iowa. Demonstrators filled the streets with signs, chants, and determination, calling for an end to authoritarian policies, mass layoffs, and rollbacks of civil rights under the Trump administration and the controversial role of Elon Musk.
“We needed reform before this administration to bring more services to people. Now we need even more,” said Rock Island resident Chris Dunn, one of the many who gathered to share stories and stand in solidarity. (KWQC)

At the Davenport rally, the energy was tangible. Families held hand-painted signs. Veterans stood shoulder to shoulder with high school students. Passing cars honked in support as the crowd grew throughout the morning.
A National Day of Action
The Davenport event was one of over 1,400 “Hands Off!” protests held simultaneously across the U.S. and internationally on April 5. Organized by a coalition of over 150 organizations—including civil rights advocates, labor unions, LGBTQ+ groups, veterans, and pro-democracy networks—the movement united nearly 600,000 registered participants in what has been called the largest single-day protest effort since President Trump’s inauguration.
“What we witnessed today was nothing short of extraordinary… We will not be silent while our rights, our futures, and our democracy are under attack,” said Rahna Epting, Executive Director of MoveOn. (handsOff2025.com)
Protesters across the country voiced concerns over sweeping government cuts to services like Social Security and healthcare, attacks on LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities, suppression of workers’ rights, and proposed mass deportations. Speakers nationwide described the moment as a rejection of what they call a “billionaire takeover” of the federal government by Trump and Musk.
